Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer marked the state’s 99th birthday on Monday with a formal launch of “Celebrate the Arizona Experience,” a countdown to the centennial.
Arizona will turn 100 years old on Feb. 14, 2012.
Celebrate the Arizona Experience is a series of events and celebrations around the centennial that includes efforts to raise money for education and outreach.
Freeport-McMoRan has pledged a $1 million contribution while Stevie and Karl Eller, long-standing Arizona philanthropists, are leading the “Celebrate the Arizona Experience,” Capitol Campaign to raise $30 million. Roughly $7 million has already been pledged.
“I invite all Arizonans to participate in the state’s centennial countdown that begins today with our 99th Statehood Day,” Brewer said in a statement. “I encourage you to take a moment to learn about Arizona history, enjoy our beautiful parks, and explore the vast beauty of our rural and Native American communities.”
