Official Centennial Events
Official Centennial Events are grassroots efforts organized by communities and entities across the state and then sanctioned by the Arizona Centennial 2012 Foundation. Official Centennial Events have a focus on education and community building and range from culinary celebrations to down-home rodeos.

10th ANNUAL ARIZONA HISTORIC PRESERVATION CONFERENCE, Prescott | The conference was originally designed as a training session for Certified Local Governments or municipalities that participate in the historic preservation activities as dictated by the State Historic Preservation Office. The conference rotates around the state to encourage participation from rural communities as well as major metropolitan areas. The population of participants is open to anyone interested in Arizona history, historic preservation, Tribal cultural resource management, education, homeownership, and more. Attendees come from neighboring states and from as far away as British Columbia, Washington DC, Illinois, and Western Europe. The two-day event consists of workshops, informational sessions, keynote presentations by internationally-renowned authors and speakers on the subjects of historic preservation methodology, technology, archaeology, legislation, funding sources, project management, cultural resource management, adaptive reuse, sustainability, and much more. 100TH APACHE COUNTRY RODEO & PARADE “100 YEARS: OUR WAY”, Springerville | July 4th, 2012 is the 100th consecutive Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo in Round Valley. The annual parade is the morning of the 4th. Community events include free pancake breakfast by the Eagar Fire Department; skateboard competitions, racquetball competitions, art walk with wine and cheese reception, vendors, bicycle racing, educational forums, and two evening dances at the rodeo grounds. 100TH ARIZONA TOWN HALL, Tucson| The 100th Arizona Town Hall will be a gathering of 135 civic, community, business and public leaders from across Arizona to spend three and a half days discussing the topic of civic engagement in Arizona. Attendees will be provided a research report in advance that will be prepared by one of Arizona’s universities and will contain both history and perspective on the subject. The actual convening of the town hall in April will involve breaking the body in 5 panels, each charged with reaching consensus in response to a series of questions and drawing conclusions and making recommendations on how to build, enhance and expand civic engagement. At the end of the session, a consensus report of all panels will be developed in plenary session. The recommendations and research will be published and available to all Arizonans and there will be community outreach sessions presented across the state. Copies of the report will also be provided to elected and public officials, community leaders and educational institutions. (April 22-25, 2012)
100 YEARS OF ARIZONA AT WORK, Phoenix | A unique exhibit of historical photographs depicting 100 years of Arizona’s economic growth. Alliance Bank of Arizona’s collections of photographs portrays the people- entrepreneurs, small business owners, and workers- in the industries and infrastructure that shaped Arizona’s growth. (January – February 2012)
100 YEARS OF ARIZONA – COLLECTIBLES, COWBOYS, AND CURIOSITIES, SCOTTSDALE | Guests can join in our celebration of 100 years of Arizona by viewing our large private collection of vintage and antique Arizona memorabilia (including signs from Arizona towns and businesses, Arizona Western movie posters, Grand Canyon souvenirs (including Fred Harvey items), artwork from Arizona Highways photographer, Ray Manley, Tucson pinball machine, wooden jukebox from Jerome, and much more.); enjoying cowboy entertainment, featuring Arizona Historian, Marshall Trimble; enjoying delicious barbeque and beverage; winning raffle prizes; photographs and much more! This event is free to the public. (February 17, 2012)
100YEARS OF LOVING GOD AND LOVING PEOPLE, Scottsdale| One hundred years ago, a small group of people gathered at Brown and Indian School Roads in Scottsdale to start a church. These pioneers of faith were determined to seek after God’s heart, to reach those within the neighborhood who didn’t know God and to build a community which would one day be known as the City of Scottsdale. We have continued to pursue this mission through faith, committed leadership and open-handed generosity. 100 years later, we continue in the urban center of Scottsdale. On March 16-18, 2012 we will celebrate 100 Years of Loving God and Loving People. There will be food, fellowship, music, art exhibits, worship and a variety of events throughout the weekend. 14TH ANNUAL SQUARE DANCE FESTIVAL – HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY ARIZONA, Phoenix | This is the Annual Square and Round Dance Festival. We will be having a special guest appearance by Rex Allen Jr. who will be singing the song “I Love you Arizona” as part of the mini concert The fee for dancers is $45 per person for the entire weekend. $15 for non dancers to enjoy the concert. Various other fee’s for day of the event tickets only. (February 17-18, 2012)
17th ANNUAL CHANDLER MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL, Chandler | The Chandler Multicultural Festival is a five hour event where culture and diversity is celebrated through two stages of entertainment, food/beverage booths, craft and information booths, and a kids area. Entertainment ranges from dancing to singing to playing instruments and much more. (January 14, 2012)
20TH ANNUAL COCHISE COWBOY POETRY AND MUSIC GATHERING, Sierra Vista| The Cochise Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering is celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of Arizona’s statehood as well as our 20th Anniversary of bringing the best Cowboy poetry and music to Cochise County. Our Gathering is considered by many to be in the top 10 Gatherings in the country! (February 3 – 5, 2012)
2011 ROUNDUP & OPEN HOUSE AT THE EMPIRE RANCH, Sonoita| The 2011 Roundup & Open House at the Historic Empire Ranch celebrates 135 years of ranching history, showcasing past and present cowboy and ranch life at the Empire Ranch. Ranching heritage displays and storytelling, cattle and horse demonstrations of roping and riding, branding, horseshoeing are among the more than 70 presenters scheduled. Historic wagons displays, barbecue favorites and old fashioned Dutch oven desserts, auctions and raffles make for fun, family friendly festivities. (November 5, 2011)
24TH ANNUAL OPTIMIST CLUB YUMA CATFISH RODEO AND NATURE FAIR, | The Yuma Catfish Rodeo and Nature Fair gives families the opportunity to test their fishing skills and to learn more about the centennial through their info booth. (October 22, 2011)
24th ANNUAL VERDE RIVER DAYS, Phoenix| The entrance fee is waived until noon, after that it is $7.00 for a vehicle with up to four people in it and $3.00 for walk in’s. Verde River Days began in 1988 to promote awareness and to celebrate and protect the fragile distinctive riparian habitat. The event will showcase informative and educational exhibits on the historical background and significance of environmental aspects of the Verde Valley Travel back in time to hear and see photographs of the history of the Verde River and the pioneers who settled in this environment. There will be a guided tour of the river with a hydrologist. Entertainment will include a bicycle trail ride, plenty of live music, storytelling, Plein Air artists, nature gallery, dance performance, story quilt, fishing clinic, live reptiles and bird display. It is an event that is sure to delight – something for everyone to enjoy in the inspiring nature setting. (September 29, 2012)
ANNUAL ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE AND FAIRE, Phoenix | Through the years, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire has celebrated Irish Culture and traditions and the 2011 event “Arizona’s Irish Celebrate the Centennial” will include special features to celebrate Arizona’s upcoming Centennial. The parade is the second largest parade in Arizona and the faire features Irish entertainment, crafts, foods, etc. celebrating and preserving the rich and varied contributions of the Irish culture. 54th HEARD MUSEUM GUILD INDIAN FAIR AND MARKET, Phoenix | One of Arizona’s most significant cultural events, the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market is a world-acclaimed festival that draws nearly 20,000 visitors and over 700 of the nation’s most outstanding and successful American Indian artists. (March 3- 4, 2012)
6th ANNUAL GEO-CACHE BASH, Phoenix| READY to EXPLORE SET to NAVIGATE GO GEO-CACHE! The 6th annual event is an opportunity to participate in a fun family activity of exploration and navigation; a high-tech search for historical clues. ” Geo-caching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting sport using GPS- enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geo-cache, (container) hidden at that location”……Jessica Compton Park Manager, Gary Peaslee, will introduce the history of GPS and the Geo-Cache sport and then teach how to do the sport. Following, the participants will be set loose to explore the nature trails of the park for an enjoyable experience of geo-caching. Some GPS units will be supplied on a first come first served basis. Yes, there will be prizes. The event includes a presentation by the Lake Havasu City Museum of History on the explorers of this area. “The raw Western Frontier’s evolution from Terra Incognito of the early explorers to the vibrant and progressive state of Arizona today is the result of advances in navigation technology. Early survey instruments guided explorers and created the maps that were used to lay out the boundaries of our state. Compass and sextant to level and laser all have played a part. Whipple and Ives coming down the Bill Williams river seeking a route for a transcontinental railroad passed within a few miles of Cattail Cove. Aubrey City, to the south was a major stop of the Colorado River Steamboats. Stops for fuel and to offload goods were surveyed and marked on maps by river mile. The museum will bring old maps from their files and will relate them to Cattail Cove and the river in that area. The Arizona Site-Stewards will demonstrate how they use GPS and maps to locate and protect Cultural Resources – a good example of how the use of GPS extends beyond geo-caching. A native Ironwood tree will be dedicated with a Centennial marker. (The Ironwood tree is one of several native trees to serve as a nurse tree for the Saguaro Cactus). Tours of the Cactus Garden, nature hikes (flora and fauna of the area). The Park Manager will present a lively and fun filled musical program. The event will conclude with a narrative slide show on the history of the last 100 years of the area that is now Cattail Cove State Park. (March 10, 2012)
6th ANNUAL SHOOTOUT ON WHISKEY ROW, Prescott| The Prescott Regulators & Their Shady Ladies, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non profit corporation dedicated to preserving history in Prescott and the state of Arizona. The group is the official Old West Ambassadors for the City of Prescott by proclamation. Our 6th Annual Shootout on Whiskey Row is known as the largest Old West Re-Enactment competition and 1800’s costume contest in the state. Re-enactment groups come from all around the state, as well as out-of-state. In addition to the two competition events, there is a large gathering of period vendors and multiple entertainment groups providing music and historical skits and dramatizations. The location is on Cortez Street in downtown Prescott right next to the famous “Square.” Visitors can walk the downtown and visit our museums (Sharlot Hall Museum, Smoki Museum and Phippen Museum of Art). The infamous Whiskey Row and historic St. Michael’s and Hassayampa Hotels are within one block of the Shootout. There is no fee to the public. People can walk around and through our layout and mingle with the period costumed event participants. In the spirit of our non-profit status, any excess money raised by the Shootout will be presented to Yavapai Big Brothers/Big Sisters. (July 23-25, 2011)
8TH ANNUAL DAISY MOUNTAIN VETERANS PARADE, Anthem| Each year, the Daisy Mountain Veterans run a Veterans Parade in the community of Anthem, Arizona to honor all who served in our nation’s military, particularly those from Arizona. The Daisy Mountain Veterans is an alliance comprised of American Legion Post 128, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 128, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12031. In 2011, the 7th Annual Parade included 90 units and more than 2000 marchers, making it one of the largest veterans events in the state of Arizona. The 8th Annual Parade scheduled for November 10, 2012 is expected to be even larger. The theme for this year’s parade will be “The Wonders of Arizona”. (November 10, 2012)
64TH ANNUAL GOLD RUSH DAYS & RODEO, Wickenburg| Admission to: Rodeo, Melodrama, Barbeque, Family Carnival, contests, and Webb Center concerts. Free admission to arts/crafts faire, 4th largest parade in AZ on Saturday, old mining contests on Sunday. Award winning signature event celebrating Wickenburg’s mining and ranching heritage. 2012 is the 64th anniversary celebration. The event has been named twice by the Arizona Office of Tourism as the Best Rural Event in Arizona; and the Library of Congress named Gold Rush Days as one of the Legacy events.(February 16-19,2012)
60TH ANNUAL REX ALLEN DAYS, Willcox |Annual celebration for Hometown Boy (Rex Allen), star of movies, television, rodeo, singer & songwriter, and the voice of Disney for more than 30 years. Celebrated with concerts, rodeo, carnival, parade, tractor pulls, Western Legends Award, Cowboy Hall of Fame Dinner and much, much more. (September 30- October 2, 2011)
74TH ANNUAL TOHONO O’ODHAM NATION RODEO & FAIR, Sells| The 74th Annual Tohono O’odham Nation Rode & Fair (“O’odham Wapkial Ha Tas”) was established in 1937 by ordinance of the Papago Council as a celebration for the Tohono O’odham Nation (“Nation”) members and public at large. The event is the longest running all Indian Rodeo in Arizona and is filled with world class Native American rodeo competitors, traditional dance performers and entertainment. The 74th Tohono O’odham Nation Annual Rodeo & Fair is more than just a Rode; it is a time honored tradition where the members of the Tohono O’odham Nation gather to celebrate their rich heritage and culture with family, friends and visitors from near and far. 77th Annual Tamale Dinner, Phoenix| The annual Friendly House Tamale Dinner is a cultural tradition that began 77 years ago in 1935 when the organization’s staff and community volunteers made and sold tamales to raise money for the important services which Friendly House provided to Arizona’s new immigrant communities and families. That is still the purpose today, but on a much larger scale. This longstanding tradition has evolved into an enchanting evening filled with traditional Mexican music and song, folkloric dancers, pageantry and history – something the whole family can enjoy. It is one of the oldest fundraising events held in Arizona and benefits Friendly House, one of Arizona’s pioneer social services organizations. (April 20, 2012)
2012 ARIZONA ARCHAEOLOGY & HERITAGE EXPO, Phoenix | The Arizona Arcaheology & Heritage Expo (Expo) is the highlight event of Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month (AAHAM) and is proclaimed by the Governor each year for the month of March. The theme of 2012 AAHAM and the Expo is “Connecting Past and Present: Celebrating Arizona’s Centennial.”
The Expo will provide a special opportunity for visitors to learn more about the state’s Centennial history, as well as why it is important to preserve historic places and archaeological sites. They will also learn about what historians, archaeologists, and tribal members do in their jobs, and about the prehistory and history of Arizona. The Expo will feature history – and archaeology- related hands-on activities, craft demonstrations, and other fun and educational event.s In addition, Boy Scout and Girl Scout history and archaeology merit badge requirements can be fulfilled at the Expo!
Special displays and booths by historical organizations, museums, Native American tribes, state and federal agencies, archaeological groups, and others will allow you to participate as an historical and/or archaeologist might in their reserach today, or make crafts and tools that teach how historic settlers and prehistoric Native Americans survived in the Southwest. Storytellers, living history re-enactors, Native American demonstrators and entertainers, talks by archaeologists and historians, and interactive activities will help make the past come alive! In addition, tours of museums, historical period parks, and archaeological sites in and around the local area, will be highlited.
Free prize raffles will occur throughout both days, and ethnic foods will be available for purchase. The Expo will give visitors new insights into Arizona’s many prehistoric, historic and contemporary cultures, and will help instill a sense of stewardship fo rour state’s fragile and nonrenewable heritage resources. A CELEBRATION OF CITIZENSHIP IN ARIZONA’S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE, Phoenix| “A Celebration of Citizenship in Arizona’s Past, Present, and Future” will take place at Mansfeld Middle School, in Tucson, AZ, on February 14th, 2012 at 1:15 pm. This event, coordinated in collaboration with Citizenship Counts, a national, nonpartisan 501(c)(3), headquartered in Phoenix, AZ. Citizenship Counts’ mission is to educate today’s youth on the tenets of citizenship, encourage them to appreciate their rights and responsibilities as Americans, and give them an opportunity to celebrate their citizenship by hosting a naturalization ceremony, participating in service-learning project, or coordinating other celebrations of engaged citizenship. During this event on Arizona’s Centennial Statehood Day, we will commemorate Arizona’s rich history and celebrate the citizens who have contributed—as well as those who continue to contribute to—our diverse culture and growth. Throughout Arizona’s history, countless naturalized citizens have served as influential and successful community leaders, business owners, inventors, government officials, educators, artists, and more. Mr. Paul Eckstein will speak about some of Arizona’s founding citizens, including those born in the United States as well as those born abroad, and will describe their contributions to Arizona. This event will also culminate students’ study of outstanding present-day Arizonan citizens, who currently impact our great state. Students at Mansfeld Middle School will learn about some key Arizona figures who are also naturalized citizens, such as Gerda Weissmann Klein, a renowned author, 2012 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, Holocaust survivor, and proud naturalized citizen, currently residing in Scottsdale, AZ. This year, Gerda will be recognized as one of Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women. Gerda will speak to the Mansfeld Middle School community at this event on Arizona’s Statehood Day. She will share with students the reasons she cherishes her American citizenship and all of the privileges and responsibilities with which it comes. In addition, we will celebrate the citizens of Arizona’s future, who are preparing to contribute to this great state as well. Students at Mansfeld Middle School will use the Citizenship Counts curriculum to learn their rights and responsibilities as citizens and to design their own service-learning project, which will allow them to learn firsthand how to be active and participatory citizens who will ensure the continued growth and strength of the Arizona community. On February 14th, 2012, we will celebrate the foundation of the state’s diversity, strength, and progress—its citizens. (February 14, 2012)
AZ CENTENNIAL COMPOSITION COMPETITION, Tempe| May 5, Saturday at 7 pm: PERFORMANCES at the MUSEUM Classical Revolution PHX A Centennial Composition Competition To honor Arizona’s centennial, Classical Revolution PHX presents a Composition Competition premiering five new pieces of music inspired by Arizona and written by composers from Arizona. All works will be performed live and judged by an expert panel and the audience to determine a winner and runner-up. So join us to hear these world premiere works and enjoy a fun and entertaining presentation. (May 5, 2012)
A DOSE OF COD LIVER OIL: THE NEW DEAL IN ARIZONA, Phoenix| The Burton Barr Central Library will exhibit panels that are on loan from the History and Archives Division of the Arizona State Department of Libraries, Archives, and Public Records. The exhibit employs photographs, documents and maps to show how Arizonans survived and thrived during the Great Depression, and how they were impacted by the New Deal. (September 1 – 27, 2011)
A NATURAL WONDER OF THE WORLD: THE ARIZONA GRAND CANYON, Phoenix| The third level of the Terminal 4 at Phoenix Sky Harbor will be transformed to a vivid tribute of the Grand Canyon. The entrances to the concourses of level 3 will be adorned by the fine art collections of the Grand Canyon Association and U.S. National Parks Service. Additionally, the gallery in Terminal 4 will feature the story and paintings of Bruce Aiken, who lived at the bottom of the Grand Canyon for more than 30 years. From the edge to the basin of the Colorado River, airport passengers and visitors will witness the grandeur of the canyon through the artist’s eye. (June 16, 2012 – January 13, 2013)
A TALE OF TWO CITIES PARADE & FESTIVAL GOODYEAR AND AVONDALE CELEBRATE ARIZONA’S CENTENNIAL, Goodyear | On Saturday, February 25, 2012, the cities of Goodyear and Avondale will host a joint parade through both cities. This inaugural parade and festival will be a celebration of Arizona’s Centennial which is being celebrated throughout 2012 beginning on the state’s 100th anniversary – February 14, 2012. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on February 25th on Litchfield Road, travel east on Thomas Road and end at Dysart Road. Depending on the number of entrants, the parade is expected to last anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half. We are currently seeking parade entrants – floats, bands, vintage cars, horses, gymnastic troops, dance troops, or other entertaining parade entries. An outdoor, family-focused festival called Trains, Planes and Automobiles, celebrating 100 years of transportation, will take place at Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) following the parade from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This fun-filled event will feature gourmet food trucks, light musical entertainment, antique car displays, arts and crafts, bouncers, a Kids Zone, carnival games, face painting, balloon art, and caricature art. AASC STATE CONVENTION, Glendale | In this celebration of Arizona’s 100th birthday, this event will be a mix of music, dances, and possible speakers of Governer Jan Brewer and Mayor Elaine Scruggs. There will be a huge display of 500 cupcakes colored in the form of the Arizona state flag. This event will have over 1800 attendees that will truly appreciate a celebration of the Grand Canyon State. The Cactus High School Student Council has been planning this convention since November of 2010 and is working with a plethora of vendors including; Satyr Entertainment, ADI Production Company, Lazer Wizardry, and the Cactus High School Culinary Department, just to name a few. ADORNED IN MEMORIES AND WRITTEN IN STONE, Phoenix | The title of this project, “Adorned in memories and Written in Stone”, alludes to the cultural traditions of death and remembrance common in Arizona from territorial times to the present. This project will combine contemporary examples of the altar tradition of Día de los Muertos with examples of the wealth of historical research information literally buried in our Phoenix cemeteries. For the past several years, the Phoenix Public Library has been host to a Día de los Muertos exhibit in the gallery of the Burton Barr Central Library. Contributions of altars by local artists are solicited through various traditional media outlets and through the library’s website at www.phoenixpubliclibrary.org. This year’s participants will be encouraged to create personal altars whose themes and subjects relate to Arizona’s history. Also this year, the Arizona Room of the Burton Barr Central Library will contribute its own altar highlighting the early cemeteries of Phoenix. Using library materials including books, documents, newspapers, and photographs, this exhibit will feature some of our local cemeteries in Phoenix and their residents. This display will make our cemeteries “come alive” as we reveal details about their inhabitants and their potential for future historical and genealogical research.

AJO ARTS ALIVE! ARIZONA CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, Ajo | Ajo Arts Alive! Arts & Culture Celebration celebrates Arizona’s Centennial with a variety of arts & cultural activities including a quilt show, an old-time fiddler contest, open artist studios, art exhibits, an old-time vaudeville show, a historic home tour, the Sonoran Shindig Desert Festival, musical performances, and more. Some activities are FREE, others have an admission fee. AMERICAN MUSICAL SALUTE TO ARIZONA, Statewide | The American Musical Salute is a patriotic themed program that has been in existence for 20 years. This program will feature youth bands, choirs and orchestras from all 50 states in a year-long tribute to Arizona, commemorating her past and celebrating her future. (January – December 2012)
ANNUAL FUNDRAISER BRUNCH, Tucson | This year we will focus the event on the celebration of the Arizona 100th Centennial by having Mr. Jim Turner, author and renowned Arizona Historian as our guest of honor and speaker. Jim will also include a book signing of his recent book, Arizona: Celebration of the Grand Canyon State. Mr. Turner will share with the audience his stories and history that he has collected since his early beginnings in 1951 in the Old Pueblo. Mr. Turner will also share the history of art with more than 500 historic and scenic images, including 20 Maynard Dixon paintings courtesy of Dr. Mark Sublette, owner of Medicine Man Gallery that are included in his book. Our goal for the event is to be educational, informative, and philanthropical. (February 18,2012)
APS FIESTA OF LIGHT ELECTRIC LIGHT PARADE, Phoenix | In partnership with the City of Phoenix Human Services Department, our Grand Marshals will be Centenarians from the Phoenix Senior Centers. In addition, the ASU School of Community Resources and Development, Parks and Recreation Management Special Event students will coordinate AZ Centennial 100 Years FREE activities for youth on December 2 during the preview party. These activities will be diverse and educational. (December 2-3, 2012)
ARIPEX STAMP SHOW | The 54th Annual Stamp Show. The show will feature rare items of postal history from throughout Arizona. Up to 60 stamp dealer booths, stamp club information, 300 frames of competitive exhibits. (February 24-26, 2012)

ARIZONA ATV OUTLAW TRAIL JAMBOREE, Eagar Event Center, Eagar | The Arizona ATV Outlaw Trail Jamboree is the only ATV Jamboree that happens in the state. ARIZONA CENTENNIAL 2012 TAIPEI CHINESE CULTURE SUMMER CAMP OF AZ, Phoenix| 2012 Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp will honor and promote Arizona Centennial Celebration in 5 days camp activities, graduation ceremony, books, on all students, teachers, and volunteers’ camp t-shirts, and all students, teachers and volunteers’ awards. We will also invite Arizona Centennial Committee Chairperson as a VIP Guest o Honor at the graduation ceremony and also present recognition to Arizona Centennial. During our 5 days camp, we will have Arizona history and culture, and themed projects to provide hands on activities to promote Arizona Centennial and to offer students the Eastern and Western cultural awareness and exchanges. In addition, during the formal graduation ceremony, we will also have a PowerPoint Presentation of Arizona for the VIP guests, students, parents and guests to honor Arizona Centennial. Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp is organized and coordinated by Arizona Chinese Mandarin and Culture Academy (AZCMCA). Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp is in team with Phoenix Sister Cities Taipei Sister Cities Committee, Taipei, Taiwan, OCAC, TECO, Santa Ana Culture Center, and Phoenix Elementary School District #1 and its 15 schools for 7 years. Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp is the recipient of Phoenix Mayor’s Partnership Award. Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp attracts over 400 students a day for 5 days from across Arizona, and camp graduation has 1000 attendants. Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp invites overseas Taiwan professional teachers by OCAC and TECO Santa Ana Culture Center and local expert teachers to guide and instruct students. Students will learn the Beauty of Taiwan culture, martial arts, kung fu, lion dance, classical and traditional dances, folk arts, folk sports, Chinese yo yo, Chinese traditional calligraphy and painting, arts and crafts, paper folding, paper cutting, Taiwanese pastries, Mandarin and more. The camp provides younger generations regarding the importance of culture, education and diversity and offers younger generations to gain the global perspective of the world. ARIZONA CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION IN PEORIA, Peoria Sports Complex | The Friday evening event will feature an old time’s baseball game with retired Major League Baseball players, kids activities and a fireworks display following the baseball game. Saturday morning, Centennial Plaza and Decade walk – an approved AHAC Legacy Project – will be dedicated by members of the Peoria City Council. ARIZONA CENTENNIAL MARRIAGE EVENTS, Phoenix| In celebration of Arizona’s Statehood Centennial, the Arizona Supreme Court and Arizona’s Clerks of Superior Court are co-hosting a marriage event on the grounds of the Arizona Courts Building, across the street from Wesley Bolin Plaza. Unmarried couples who meet Arizona’s statutory requirements will have the opportunity to be married by Rebecca White Berch, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. There is no admission fee but statutory fees for the marriage license will be required before the event ($72.00 in cash or accepted credit cards). Licenses can be purchased from any Clerk of the Superior Court in Arizona at any time but must be purchased no later than February 6, 2012 to participate in the ceremony on February 14, 2012. ARIZONA COWBOY POETS GATHERING, Yavapai College Campus Prescott, Arizona Yavapai| Arizona has a rich history in cowboy poetry. ARIZONA HISTORY & HI-JINX, Sedona Heritage Museum, Sedona| An original one-act, one-man show featuring stories about the growing pains of the “Baby State”, i.e., suffrage & racism of 100 years ago, the statehood vote, the constitutional convention, politcs of the day intertwined with the history of the greater Sedona area and what was happening here that was impacted by state events, along with what some of the pioneers thought about statehood. Also stories of local pioneer/settlement topics that relate back to a statehood theme. Each show will have ‘core content’, but new poems and new stories will come and go throughout the year for variety. Peach is a professional actor, director and screenwriter, along with being a certified interpretative guide. The format of the show is dramatic or comedic vignettes, first-person style recollections and cowboy poetry. ARIZONA SINGS- CELEBRATING THE BIRTH&GROWTH OF OUR STATE, TUCSON| Catalinas Community Chorus, a non-profit, non-denominational chorus of 50 members will perform two concerts in April of 2012 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of statehood for Arizona. ARIZONA’S STRENGTH – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE, Tucson| Commerce Bank of Arizona in partnership with El Charro Café and the Stillwell House will host a free, public exhibition highlighting the strong Mexican American heritage of Tucson as lived through generations of the Flin/Flores families. The event, on the grounds of the historic 1901 Stillwell House – originally a boarding house for railroad workers – its adjoining gardens and casita – will feature a collection of articles about and reproductions of excerpts from the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo – the treaty that ended the Mexican-American War and whose exhibition (partially funded by the Bank) in honor of Arizona’s centennial year of statehood recently concluded at the Arizona State Museum (ASM). ARIZONA TRAIL CENTENNIAL ADVENTURE, | The Arizona Trail Centennial Adventure is to celebrate our state’s 100th birthday by enjoying many beautiful Arizona outdoor areas and out state’s communities, flora, fauna and history. The goal is for the many different groups to traverse a section of the Arizona National Scenic Trail and in so doing, traverse the entire 800+ mile trail within the six week event time frame. AZ AUTHORS CENTENNIAL WRITING CONTEST, Statewide | The Arizona Authors Association has run a writing contest for 30 years and, in 2011, the contest will honor the Centennial by creating a special category for stories on Arizona by Arizona residents. Contest winners will be awarded a monetary prize and publication in the 2011 Arizona Literary Magazine – Centennial Edition. (January – July, 2011)

AZ CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION – YOU ARE THERE, RADIO THEATER SHOW, Sedona | Radio Theater style presentation re-enacting some moments, debates, personalities, humor and drama of AZ’s constitutional convention. An original show based on historical research. Audience participation. Decor of the era. Refreshments. Radio Theater is a form of audio storytelling with minimal visual components. AZ ROOTS, Chandler| General Admission, $10/ticket. The Chandler Children’s Choir is a non-profit community children’s choir consisting of 85 singers ages 7-15. Founded in 2008 by Director Aimee Stewart, the choir draws singers from all over the East Valley. Our AZ Roots concert will entertain and teach our singers and the audience about Arizona’s history through music from Mexico, Native American, and Early American Folk tunes. (May 5, 2012)

AzAA 2012 DUTCH BERTHOLF CENTENNIAL SPRING CONFERENCE & FLY-IN, Phoenix | The “Centennial” Spring Conference will include agenda items and activities focused on the history of aviation in Arizona, including speakers, presentations and historical exhibits. A key event will be a “Centennial” State-wide Fly-in held the same weekend that kicks off the AzAA Spring Centennial Conference. The Fly-in will be held at Tucson’s Ryan Field and will attract aircraft from all over the State. The event will place special emphasis on the development of aircraft over the years ranging from antique to the latest design and composite aircraft and the part they have played throughout Arizona’s aviation history. AzAA will partner with other organizations including the Tucson Airport Authority, the Arizona Pilots Association, the local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Pima Air & Space Museum, and the Arizona Business Aircraft Association to help assure a successful event that draws attention to Arizona’s Centennial and the contributions that aviation has played in the history and development of the State. BECOMING ARIZONA: THE VALENTINE STATE, Tucson| “Becoming Arizona: The Valentine State” recreates the colorful story of Arizona’s path to statehood. This year-long exhibition is on display from Aug. 22 – May 30, 2012 in the gallery at Special Collections, 1510 E. University Blvd. “Becoming Arizona” features a selection of maps, books, photographs, letters, scrapbooks and unique items selected from Special Collections’ extensive Southwest and Borderlands holdings. The exhibit documents the experiences and stories that defined the region during the colonial period, territorial times and the years leading up to 1912 statehood. Included in “Becoming Arizona” is the 1848 Tratado de Paz, the official Mexican printing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Also included is William Oury’s handwritten speech that seeks to defend his role in the killing of Apache women and children at the Camp Grant massacre of 1871. A scrapbook compiled by George W.P. Hunt, Arizona’s first governor, offers news clippings and photographs that reflect the issues leading up to, and following, Arizona statehood. Unique items on loan from the Arizona Historical Society – including Wyatt Earp’s wedding ring, Geronimo’s tinder bag, and a snuff box belonging to Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Salpointe – complement the materials selected from Special Collections.

BLOOD INTO WINE – THE STRONGHOLD- AZ CENTENNIAL WINE, Yuma| Blood Into Wine is a very entertaining documentary chronicling the rise of The Stronghold Vineyard and Winery, just outside of Jerome, makers of the Official Arizona Centennial Wines – a red, a white, and a rose. NexGen is hosting the film – free admission, donations to benefit the Historic Theatre accepted – a QnA session to follow with some of the producers and winemakers, as well as a wine tasting featuring the Centennial Wines. BUCKEYE DAYS – ARIZONA CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, Buckeye | For Town of Buckeye sponsored events there is NO cost for admission. Food and other vendor items will be available to purchase but are not required to be part of our Centennial Celebrations. There is a privately sponsored rodeo occurring the same weekend with an admission fee. Buckeye’s Mainstreet Coalition is sponsoring a cattle drive and parade on MC 85/Monroe Ave. our “Mainstreet” at no cost. Part of Buckeye’s industry is still actively involved Cotton and Cattle traditional C’s of Arizona. Our combined events will cover the rest and a few extra C’s like cowboys. The Buckeye Mainstreet Coalition is sponsoring a cattle drive and a non-motorized parade Saturday. The spirit of Western lore the Town will also sponsor an old fashioned Gunfight at high noon and 1:30p.m. We will also have games for kids including; copper coins in the cotton, pony rides, and roping. The weekend will also feature a Senior Pro Rodeo and Buckeye Valley Newspaper’s 100th birthday. (January 27, 2012 to January 29, 2012
BUFFALO SOLDIER, CAMP VERDE| Volunteer reinactors conduct living history presentations and riding demonstrations to portray what life was like for the Buffalo Soldiers. Dutch Oven Cooking demonstrations and meals are available in addition to the Buffalo Soldier Riders, who conduct a presentation and volunteers will be dressed in period clothing. CAREFREE SUNDIAL CENTENNIAL TIME CAPSULE, Carefree | The Carefree Sundial is the largest sundial in Arizona. In honor of the Arizona Centennial Carefree will place a Centennial Time Capsule into the Sundial to be opened in 2059, the Centennial of the Sundial. The public event to place the capsule will be held on February 14th.
CAVE CREEK MUSEUM CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION – LOOKING BACK 100 YEARS, Cave Creek | Our event will accurately portray life in the Cave Creek Mining District which spanned 144 square miles, north to Tonto National Forest, west to I-17, east to Humbolt Mountain and south to Pinnacle Peak, which was home to 4 of the 5C’s: citrus, cattle, cotton and climate that Arizona was known for. The event is open to the public free of charge on February 14th, Statehood Day. General Admission is $5.00 adults, $3.00 for seniors, $2.00 students, children under 12 free The Cave Creek Museum has planned an event that will take participants back 100 years to the days when there were fewer than 300 people in our Cave Creek Mining District and where mining and ranching were the means to support family. The event will focus on what life was like in Cave Creek and what the political atmosphere was statewide as we prepared for statehood. (February 11, 2012 to February 19, 2012)
CELEBRATING ARIZONA’S CENTENNIAL, Phoenix | The Arizona Centennial concert will feature music that celebrates the diversity of Arizona’s cultural history since becoming a state on February 14, 1912, and will include the performance of two newly-commissioned pieces for that special occasion for orchestra and choir. CENTENNIAL ELECTRIC LIGHT PARADE, Yuma| Yuma’s Electric Light Parade will take on a Centennial theme this year. Scheduled for December 10, 2011, the parade winds through Yuma city streets ending in the Historic Downtown District. The parade theme this year will be “Yuma.. 100 years in the making.” (December 10, 2011)
CENTENNIAL GRANDE FIESTA CELEBRATION, Clarkdale | A celebration of Clarkdale’s Centennial and the Hispanic culture that was very important in Clarkdale’s history. This gigantic fiesta will include entertainment by Ballet Folklorica De Los Ninos, singers from Clarkdale-Jerome School, and other local Hispanic talent. There will be food booths offering Mexican and American food and Indian Fry bread. Other booths will include local arts and crafts artisans. There will also be piñatas for 5-7 year olds and 8-11 year olds. (April 28, 2012)
CENTENNIAL SERENADE, Metro Valley| Our fundraising gala will be held on 4-14 at Memorial Hall, Steele Indian School Park. This is a fundraising event with a ticket price of $125 for a hosted reception, dinner and entertainment. All 300 of our choristers will perform throughout the evening. Our spring concerts will be held on May 19th & 20th. Tickets are $10, $17.50 and $20. Over 300 children ages 8 -18 will present two heartwarming concerts performing songs from around the world and special performances for Arizona’s Centennial. The PCC Gala and concerts will commemorate Arizona’s statehood with selections of Arizona songs that evoke the natural splendor and peoples of the West. The highlight of the season will be the performance of an Arizona themed song, commissioned specifically for the Phoenix Children’s Chorus by Dave and Jean Perry. With dedicated children from all over the city learning the intricacies and nuances of vocal music, the Phoenix Children’s Chorus is composed of two chapters in Central Phoenix and the East Valley. The chorus’ weekly rehearsals culminate in live performances where the children showcase the skills they have developed through teamwork, training and practice. CENTENNIAL ZOOFEST, 100 YEARS OF ARIZONA NATURAL HISTORY, Prescott | The event is “Centennial Zoofest, 100 Years of Arizona Natural History.” There will be four areas of focus: what species lived in Arizona 100 years ago that don’t live here now; what species have been introduced to Arizona that weren’t here 100 years ago; what do Arizonans need to know about living alongside wildlife; and what current, on-going conservation efforts and how people can assist in those efforts. CENTRAL AZ ASSOC. CENTENNIAL, Prescott, Tucson, Phoenix| A special event operation where several amatuer radio operators will be operating their radio stations from their homes using the call letters K7UGA. K7UGA were the call letters from the late Senior Senator Barry Goldwater. As the radio stations make contact with radio stations throughout the country and the world, a log will be maintained of each station’s call letters. Afterwards, a conformation will be sent to each station contacted by K7UGA. The radio stations will be operationg from Phoenix, Tucson, as well as Prescott. (February 13-19, 2012)
CHANDLER CHUCK WAGON COOK-OFF, Chandler| The Chandler Chuck Wagon Cook-Off demonstrates 1880s Old West lifestyle and is expected to draw 7-10 wagon teams from across the western United States. The highlight is an old fashioned culinary competition from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, where the teams will prepare their foods from their authentic chuck wagons and use cooking methods and utensils in the style of those used in 1880s cattle drives. Meals will be available for the public to purchase, and the event will also feature stage entertainment, family activities and shopping opportunities. Meals are available to purchase for $10 per plate. The event will also feature a centennial exhibit of historic photographs of chuck wagons in the Arizona Territory. (November 11-12, 2011)
CHRISTMAS VILLAGE AT THE QUARTERMASTER DEPOT STATE HISTORIC PARK, Yuma| The Christmas Village at the Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park is a magical Christmas village with thousands of lights decorating the park, along with walk-in sized playhouses including stores, a gingerbread cottage, and Santa’s Workshop. These playhouses have been sponsored by local businesses. Admission to the village is $5 for the first visit and $1 for subsequent visits. Visitors purchase a Polar Pass for admittance. CIVIL WAR IN THE SOUTHWEST, Picacho Peak State Park, Eloy | $7.00 per vehicle, holding up to four adults, children under 12 are free $3.00 daily parking fee Each year hundreds of spectators descend on Picacho Peak State Park to watch re-enactments of an Arizona Civil War skirmish and the New Mexico battles of Glorieta and Val Verde. Visitors travel from around the country to experience the three fascinating historic re-enacments complete with lifestyles of the soldiers in the southwest during the 1860’s. More than 200 re-enactors come from many states and camp out at the park with their authentic Civil War camping gear. Along with the reenactments, there will be civilian living history demonstrations, a Traveling Theatrical Troupe, reading of proclamations, period fashion show, tea party and church service. CITY OF PHOENIX BACK TO SCHOOL AND HEALTH FAIR, | This is an annual back to school informational and health fair. Featuring over 50 information tables related to education, school and lifestyle for families. Free backpacks with school supplies and free haircuts for children, entertainment and an ending plenary are designed to open up discussions for the surrounding neighborhood with panel members in specialty areas such as parks services, law, health, school issues, consumer products, civic engagement and much more.. CONFEDERATE ARIZONA – DRAGOON SPRINGS, El Mirage| “Confederate Arizona-Dragoon Springs” will be a celebration and memorial service held on the 150 anniversary of the military engagement between a small group of soldiers from Co. A, Arizona Rangers, CSA and Apache warriors led by chiefs Francisco and Cochise. The troopers were attacked by approximately 100 warriors in a small box canyon near the abandoned Dragoon Springs Butterfield Stagecoach Station. Four Confederate soldiers were killed and others were wounded. The fallen Rangers are buried at the stage coach station ruins. A short memorial service and honorarium will be held at the grave site. CONFEDERATE ARIZONA-TUCSON, El Mirage | Confederate Arizona-Tucson will be a re-enactment of the arrival of Co. A, Arizona Rangers, CSA at the Presidio San Agustin del Tucson and the raising of the Confederate National flag over the town. These events took place February 28-March 1, 1862, two weeks after Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, signed the order officially recognizing the Territory of Arizona as a part of the Confederate States of America. Re-enactors will be in uniforms and period dress. (March 3, 2012)
CONFEDERATE FLAG PRESENTATION AND PROCLAMATION, El Mirage| It is a re-nactment, of the formation of the Confederate Territory of Arizona (1861) was a key step toward the establishment of the US Territory of Arizona (1863) and eventually the State of Arizona (1912). Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, signed the bill, passed by the CSA Congress, granting the Territory of Arizona Full admission into the Confederate States, including a representative to the Confederate Congress on February 14, 1862. Official statehood for Arizona would occur on the same date 50 years later. (August 20, 2011)
COWGIRLS W/ HEART, TUCSON | In honor of our 87th Annual Tucson Rodeo and recognizing our state’s 100 year Centennial Celebration we ask that you join us for a night of traditional country music and dance in celebration of tradition! Step back in time when our local ranchers and cowboys gathered to celebrate the local traditions which have made this state so noted for our rich ranching and rodeo heritage. Come celebrate the sport of rodeo and attend our 3rd Annual Cowgirls w/Heart Rodeo Dance. Our motto at “Cowgirls w/Heart” is “Taking Pride in Tradition.” Our goal is to establish and revive the gatherings of years long ago when people came together to celebrate local tradition. DAISY MOUNTAIN VETERANS PARADE, Maricopa | The Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade has a substantial connection to the Arizona Centennial through the participation of numerous historic groups. In addition to the parade there will be models of several well-known national monuments with historical connections to Arizona. (November 12, 2011)
DEDICATION OF AZ CENTENNIAL PATHWAY & OPEN HOUSE, Bullhead City | The museum has laid out a pathway on museum property that had various stations where historical events leading to Arizona Statehood are presented via exhibits. At the end of the Pathway a Centennial Memorial Garden will honor the pioneers in our area that contributed to AZ becoming a State. The Museum will have a mobile exhibit concerning the Centennial that will be moved to different sites in the community and will present a series of Centennial programs during the Centennial week. DESERT VIEW: A CENTENNIAL OF ART IN PHOENIX, Phoenix | By illuminating Phoenix’s 96-year history of art collecting, the show will present an essential but little-known aspect of our state’s cultural heritage. It will feature early efforts by the Woman’s Club of Phoenix to raise money and purchase artworks for the city, and trace the arc of collecting through the 1980s when the city formed the Phoenix Arts Commission (renamed Arts and Cultur Commission) and Public Art Program. DOUBLE BUTTE CEMETERY TOUR, Tempe| The admission fee is $15 per person. Registration will be made possible through the City of Tempe class registration system. After registration/check-in, refreshments will be served. Mayor Hallman will make a few brief remarks of welcome and give a history of the cemetery. Participants will be given a handout about what to look for in historic cemeteries. The participants will be divided into small groups of 10 to 15 people. They will proceed in a shotgun start, making a circuit to visit the gravesites that will be featured as part of the tour. Guides will escort the groups and interpreters will be stationed at each stop to tell the story of the individual or family at that site. (March 4, 2012)
DOWNTOWN TEMPE WALK THROUGH HISTORY, Tempe| Tours will focus on the original Tempe (San pablo/ Hayden’s Ferry) town site and will include descriptions of the development of the community within the board patterns of state growth and development. EFFIE ANDERSON SMITH: PIONEER PAINTER, San Diego | An exhibit of paintings entitled EFFIE ANDERSON SMITH: Pioneer Painter – a retrospective of her finest works, in honor of Arizona’s Statehood Centennial. The artist lived from 1869 to 1955, and died at the Arizona Pioneers Home, where she resided since 1951, after being a 55 year resident of Cochise County. She is a listed artist – see AskArt.com. EXHIBITION: THE BORDER PROJECT: SOUNDSCAPES, LANDSCAPESE & LIFESCAPES, Tucson | The Border Project presents sound art, music, performance, painting, sculpture, installation, video, film, and photography that examine historical and contemporary life in the U.S./Mexico borderlands region. Unique in its range of focus, the exhibition treats Arizona, USA and Sonora, Mexico as partners with shared histories, dreams and political realities. It celebrates the rich cultural heritage of this region from Spanish colonization, to Mexican independence, to the Gadsden Purchase, through today. Building on these legacies, The Border Project acknowledges the complexities of border communities that encompass narratives of Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, Asian Americans, American Indians, and Europeans. The exhibition also explores borders as artificial boundaries, and purposefully crosses them. Visitors will hear sounds, experience fronterizo narratives, and view contemporary art forms juxtaposed with historical documents, allowing for an immersive experience. The artists, most of whom are emerging and mid-career artists from Arizona and Mexico, will be appearing throughout the exhibition for public programming. EXPO 2012, SALT RIVER AMERICAN INDIAN COMMUNITY | In honor of the State’s 2012 Centennial, The Solanna Group –a Salt River American Indian member-owned economic development and land advisory/investment firm, will establish a 10-month long World’s Fair styled EXPO on its property at Salt River, as a 100 year birthday tribute to the people of Arizona. Themed “Nature’s Wisdom” and “The Future,” the Fair is designed as a symbolic portal to the next 100 years and recognition of the significantly intertwined legacy of both Salt River and Arizona as innovative, industrious, and indomitable peoples. ExplorerFest 2012, Phoenix| ExplorerFest is an annual festival held in October every year by the Explorer Middle School PTO for area students, families and community members. We offer food, games, activities, entertainment, competitions and enrichment. Everything is included in the purchase price except for the food and any merchandise purchased. FIESTA DE TUMACACORI, Tumacacori| The 2011 Fiesta will the the 41st annual Fiesta held at Tumacácori National Historical Park. The fiesta celebrates all of the cultures which have lived and influenced life in the Santa Cruz Vally, including O’odham, Yaqui, Apache, Mexican, Spanish, American, and others. There are approximately 50 booths with traditional foods and handicrafts, craft demonstrations, and information. All booths are held by local and regional non-profit organizations. Entertainment is scheduled on the main stage all day, both days, representing all of the described cultures. A multi-cultural mariachi procession and mass takes place in front of the old mission church on Sunday morning. There is an area of hands-on activities for kids provided by Tumacácori and other National and State parks and organizations from around southern Arizona. (December 3-4, 2011)

FESTIVAL 48, Phoenix | $30 for individuals, $48 for couples. Price includes show, food and beverages. Centennial Theatre Foundation is an official Legacy Project. This event is designed to raise funds for us to coproduce two plays next season with three non-profit theater companies. They are Desert Foothills Theatre, Actors Theatre and Arizona Jewish Theatre Company. The two plays being produced are Mr. Conservative, a play about the life and times of Barry Goldwater. The other play is The Wallace & Ladmo Show, a play about the much loved Arizona children’s television program that aired here for 36 years. Festival 48 presents scenes from Arizona themed plays presented by participating Arizona theatre companies. FORT MCDOWELL FIESTA BOWL PARADE, Phoenix| The Fort McDowell Fiesta Bowl Parade presented by Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation remains a time-honored Valley tradition and features a dazzling array of colorful floats, magnificent helium balloons, harmonious marching bands and spirited specialty and equestrian units. Valley residents and visitors alike annually line the two-mile parade route in central Phoenix to witness this spectacular celebration, making the Parade a holiday custom known and loved by locals as well as fans traveling to celebrate the Festival of College Football. The parade is in its 41st year. (December 31, 2011)
FORT VERDE DAYS, CAMP VERDE| Friday, October 12th is Kid’s Day in which we invite students from Northern Arizona to attend special presentations and workshops that relate to the life of a soldier, with the emphasis on the Indian Wars period and the soldiers who resided and served at Fort Verde, along with their families and early pioneers. Fort Verde will have volunteers and reenactors dressed in period clothing, donning accoutrements, conducting weapons demonstrations, presentations, Vintage baseball, 1880’s Period Church Service and Dutch Oven cooking demonstrations. FOUNDER’S DAY FESTIVAL, Marana| Founders’ Day is a celebration of Marana’s 1977 incorporation. The event is being expanded from one day to four this year and includes a parade, carnival, live entertainment and various historical displays. (October 27-30, 2011)
FOUNTAIN HILLS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, Fountain Hills| The event is being planned to coordinate with and bring attention to the State Centennial Celebration event and is to take place at our newly developed Centennial Circle. While the activities are still in the planning stages, we have the following planned: invitation and introductions of elected officials and dignitaries, introduction and congratulations to all present who are 100 (or more) years old, State Historian, Marshall Trimble, as the guest speaker, pictures of the Town’s history going back 100 years, entertainment by the local western choral group, the OK Corral, community and school bands, Yavapai dancers, old issues of the Fountain Hills Times on display, event volunteers from the L. Alan Cruikshank River of Time Museum dressed in period costumes, a display featuring 100 books about Arizona, an art contest with the winners being announced, and a sheet cake celebrating the Centennial and other refreshments to be served by the local Scout troops. The Fountain Hills Historical Society will have assembled items for a time capsule that will be interred. The highlight will be the dedication of the newly-completed Fountain Hills Centennial Circle. FREE BOARD EVERY DAY THE SUN DOESN’T SHINE, Yuma| A lot has changed in Yuma over the last century – but one thing that hasn’t is the reliable sunshine that favors this southwestern town an average of 350 days a year. In fact, back in the day, Yuma hotels boasted that they offered “free board every day the sun doesn’t shine.” Now, in honor of Arizona’s Centennial celebration, the whole community will renew the historic offer for twelve months beginning August 1. FREEDOM FEST 2011 – ARIZONA CENTENNIAL, Show Low | Show Low hosts one of the largest Independence Day events in the state. Our community swells to nearly 50,000 freedom loving citizens looking for an opportunity to escape the heat and enjoy Main Street America. Freedom Fest activities include parade, concert, fireworks, food and craft vendors and family games. (July 4, 2011).
FROM STORY ROCK TO STORY BOOKS, Phoenix| Exhibit featuring important pieces including Navajo Artist Shonto Begay’s eight-foot wide acrylic painting on canvas My Story Rock II and beloved children’s book author Marguerite Henry’s original manuscript and illustrations of the award winning classic Brighty of the Grand Canyon. These and other items from the historic collection will be on display in the Children’s Place at the Burton Barr Central Library to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Arizona’s Statehood.

GILBERT FEST – MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL, Gilbert| Gilbert Fest – Music and Arts Festival is a two day event held at Higley Center for the Performing Arts. This event will feature local tallent along with headlinning acts from Branson Missouri in tribute to Arizona’s 100 years of statehood. The most outstanding performance will be awarded the “Centennial Cup”. Performers may register at www.gilbertfest.org. GILBERT HISTORY AWARDS, Gilbert| The Gilbert History Awards is a project born from the brainstorming of Gilbert’s State Centennial Committee that started meeting in 2010. The purpose of the Gilbert History Awards is to recognize and honor excellence during the period of Arizona statehood of citizens, either living or deceased, associated with Gilbert, AZ. The categories for the award include: Agriculture, Sports, Religion, Commerce, Arts, Military, Science, Community Service, Social Service, Education and Medicine. The awards will be given out at a ceremony in Town of Gilbert Council Chambers on Tuesday, November 15th at 6 p.m. (November 15, 2011).
GLENDALE FOLK & HERITGAE FESTIVAL, Glendale | The City of Glendale Folk & Heritage Festival is a one of a kind special event held in the Valley of the Sun. Formally known as the Phoenix Folk Traditions Music Festival, Glendale Parks and Recreation adopted this engaging cultural event in 2009 and transformed it into a full-scale folk and heritage festival at the Sahuaro Ranch Park Historic Area. The event is now a nationally recognized, two-day celebration of folk music and related history and culture. A festival committee comprised of recreation staff and six community volunteers formed in July of 2008 to bring the event to Glendale. Committee volunteers were carefully recruited based on experience with folk music events and their ability to reach the folk music community. The volunteers on the committee have over 100 years of combined experience with folk music. This event offers 150 individual performances and 52 workshops throughout the weekend. All talent for performances and workshops is completely donated by musicians and instructors. Patrons choose from musical styles ranging from folk and bluegrass to cowboy poetry and storytelling. Workshops are developed to attract an audience of beginner musicians to accomplished songwriters. The workshops focus on providing a non-intimidating environment for new musicians/songwriters to learn and grow their skills as well as introducing instruments and music to children in a fun atmosphere. This innovative event takes advantage of the entire 17-acre Sahuaro Ranch historic site. The facility hosts five music performance venues, four workshop venues, and an established “jam session” area for musician participation. (March 24-25, 2012).
GLENDALE GLITTERS SPECTACULAR WEEKEND, Glendale| Arizona’s largest free holiday light display takes center stage each year at Glendale Glitters Spectacular Weekend. The festival is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year as it marks the night when the city of Glendale’s stunning display of 1.5 million lights, which illuminate 16 blocks of Historic Downtown Glendale, is turned on for the very first time to kick off the holiday season. Opening night festivities begin with the award-winning Countdown to Glendale Glitters Show, which this year will feature special guest Governor Jan Brewer. Entering its 18th year, Glendale Glitters is synonymous with holiday tradition on Thanksgiving weekend in the Valley of the Sun! In fact, the event was named azcentral.com’s Critics’ Choice for the Best Festival in the Valley in 2008. Also, this year, Glendale Glitters was named “top 25 Events in AZ” by the AAA Highroads Magazine. GRAND CANYON HISTORY SYMPOSIUM, Phoenix| The 2012 Grand Canyon History Symposium is a three-day symposium of talks, presentations and tours focusing on all aspects of Grand Canyon history and the history of the Colorado Plateau. The symposium will be held at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park over the weekend of (January 26-29, 2012).
GRAND CANYON LIMITED, Reno City, Nevada| Trains and Travel International of Reno, Nevada is pleased to announce a jointly sponsored event called the “THE GRAND CANYON LIMITED” with the Central Coast Railway Club from Santa Clara, California. This charter passenger train excursion to Arizona celebrating this state’s centennial. Operating plans call for The Grand Canyon Limited to be pulled by the big Santa Fe ATSF 3751 4-8-4 steam locomotive from Los Angeles to Arizona via Parker-Wickenburg (Congress)-Williams-Grand Canyon and return. Additional operating plans call for this very special train to double head with the former CB&Q 4960 2-8-2 steam locomotive on the Grand Canyon Railroad between Williams and the South Rim roundtrip. Plans call for photo run-bys to be made on most days, freight traffic and timing permitting. This 6 day steam excursion will be operated under contract with Amtrak, BNSF, Grand Canyon and the Arizona & California Railroads. Trains & Travel International is the official reservation agent for this excursion. All reservations and ticket sales must be made through us. HASHKNIFE PONY EXPRESS, Holbrook, Payson, Scottsdale |Every year, Arizonans gather to honor the days when mail was delivered the old fashioned way – by horse. The 54th Annual Hashknife Pony Express ceremonial trail begins in Holbrook, stops in Payson, and ends in Scottsdale, delivering first class mail along the way. (February 7-10, 2012)
HASSAYAMPA HERITAGE DAYS, Wickenburg| This event celebrates The Nature Conservancy’s Hassayampa River Preserve’s 147 years of history from its beginning as the Frederic Brill Ranch through its evolution as the “Garden of Allah”, one of Arizona’s first dude ranches, the Lazy RC cattle ranch, and finally as a nature preserve. This event showcases the history of the people and commerce along the Hassayampa River near Wickenburg and the critical role this area played in the development of Central Arizona. HAYDEN CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, Tucson| ASARCO and Arizona share a long history. This year, ASARCO celebrates 100 years of copper smelting in Hayden. HIGH COUNTRY HUMMERS FESTVIVAL, Eagar| The High Country Hummers Festival is an annual nature festival based on educating the public on the natural history of hummingbird species occurring in Arizona’s higher elevation forests. It is hosted by the Arizona Game and Fish Department at the Department’s Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area (Sipe), and has been conducted each year beginning in 2003. The one-day event is always conducted on the last Saturday in July because it is the peak of the hummingbird migration through this part of Arizona and to maintain consistent data collection each year on captured birds. It is open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to noon.
The primary program consists of staff and volunteers from the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory (SABO) – a non-profit scientific and educational organization based in Bisbee – capturing, measuring and banding hummingbirds on site. The public is able to observe each phase of this process up close, ask questions and take close-up photos. The SABO staff also presents a detailed PowerPoint on hummingbird natural history.
There are other peripheral exhibitors, booths and activities during the morning, including a program on basic birding skills given by the White Mountain Audubon Chapter and a live wildlife exhibit set up by the Department’s Adobe Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The public moves at its own pace among exhibitors and presentations. (July 28, 2012)
HISTORIC HOME AND BUILDING TOUR, GLOBE| The tour leaves from the historic train depot in downtown Globe. Participants will be driven to several stops by volunteers and at each stop, hosts will explain the history and past residents of the home or building. Participants stay as long as they like at each stop, picking up one of the shuttle vehicles to the next stop when they are ready. A special stop this year will be the “Globe Cemetery, which has several famous Arizona history figures interred there. An antique show by the Gila County Historical Society and a quilt show by the copper Country Quilters round out the weekend. Tickets are sold from 9 am to 3 pm both days, with the last tour shuttles leaving shortly after 3 pm. (March 10, 2012 and March 11, 2012)
HISTORIC ROUTE 66 FUN RUN | Approximately 900 vintage vehicle, and thousands of spectators from all over the world come to Northern Arizona to celebrate the history of Route 66. Activities take place in every community from Seligman to Topock/Golden along this longest remaining continuous stretch of the Route including a show & shine in Kingman, a BBQ hosted by the Haulapai Tribe in Peach Springs, gunfights in Oatman, and an award ceremony in Topock. Vintage cars, great entertainment, vendor, and family-friendly activities make this an event that has something for everyone. (May 4-6, 2012)
HISTORY OF THE SOLDIER, Camp Verde | History of the Soldier is a military time-line event paying tribute to soldiers who have served and those who continue to serve our country. Volunteers and re-enactors conduct living history presentations, along with Dutch oven cooking demonstrations and vintage baseball games. (April 9-10, 2011)
I LOVE YOU ARIZONA, Apache Junction | An original 12 act play, setin a 1912 AZ community, which integrates the political, cultural, economic, and social facets of AZ life. The story includes romance, a love triangle, conflict and adventure, the exploits of Eastern vowboys moving west, a spirited saloon with gambling townsmen, vivacious dancing girls and a gossip, exchange of health remedies and advice. A charismatic mayor and numerous social events include an auctioning of picnic baskets, an evening at the “Oprey House” and the advent of a group of mail order brides to enliven the plot. In the end conflict and questions are resolved with the appearance of an Eastern stranger, who has come to claim a niece, the Madam’s adopted daughter. The final scene depicts the town’s celebration of Feb. 14, 1912. Throughout the play classic Western music is sung along with popular songs, saloon songs of the era, folk and religious ongs in the quilting bee. Research has supplied us with cowboy humor and expressions used at that time, which we have incorporated into the speech of the characters. (February 7-9, 2012)
IN THE DEVIL’S FRYING PAN, Cave Creek, Flagstaff, Tucson | A cast of actors of all ages will present this original play with music based on the oral histories of Arizonans from the state’s territorial period through the time of its statehood. The play will tell stories of extraordinary Arizonans from all over the state and illustrate how these disparate characters came together to form a unified state. The play will be written so that portions of it can be made available to schools. (January- August 2012)
INNOVATION DAY AT U OF A, Tucson | The Arizona Centennial concert will feature music that celebrates the diversity of Arizona’s cultural history since becoming a state on February 14, 1912, and will include the performance of two newly-commissioned pieces for that special occasion for orchestra and choir. LA FIESTA DE LOS VAQUEROS, Tucson | Tucson’s oldest community event, La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, is celebrating Arizona’s Centennial at their 86th annual rodeo. The nine-day rodeo celebrates the Western heritage and traditions of Arizona’s cowboys and ranchers and brings in visitors from all over the world. (February 19-27, 2011)
LA PAZ COUNTY FAIR, Parker | Our theme will be “Celebrating Arizona at the La Paz County Fair” and we will be using the Arizona Centennial as the main focus for Fair book which is distributed throughout the County and also the exhibit hall will have themed booths that include Arizona history, agriculture and education. The teachers also work with all of their students to provide educational displays that will be focused on the Arizona Centennial and history. We have also teamed with the history museum and its members to help us accurately portray history in our county. (March 8-11, 2012)
LAKE HAVASU MUSIC BREWS AND BBQ CHAMPIONSHIP, Lake Havasu City | Lake Havasu Music Brews and BBQ Championship has been the Premier State BBQ Championship for the past three years. We are sanctioned by KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society) also the largest U.S. sanctioning body. We are the only West Coast Qualifier to the Chest-to-Chest National Brisket Championship and a Rocky Mountain BBQ Association Cup Event. Until just this past May we held the privilege of being the Largest State BBQ Championship West of the Mississippi. Currently we host and average some 85 Professional BBQ teams from all across the country. MAPLE ASH CELEBRATES THE ARIZONA CENTENNIAL, Tempe| This event is the unveiling and celebration of public art commissioned by the Maple Ash Neighborhood Association in Tempe. The art work was conceptualized, researched and designed by neighborhood volunteers guided by clay artist Nina Solomon. Ms. Solomon hand-crafted each tile using a photo-to-tile application process that she developed. She was assisted by neighborhood volunteers in installation of the artwork on a previously selected flood irrigation standpipe. The project was funded through a City of Tempe Maryanne Corder Neighborhood Grant. Tempe’s Neighborhood Services Office, Historic Preservation Office, Public Works Department and the Tempe History Museum generously provided consultation and support. The free public event, Maple Ash Celebrates the Centennial, will include a short ceremony at the standpipe on the southwest corner of Maple Avenue and 10th Street in Tempe on Saturday February 18 at 10:30 a.m. featuring remarks by the artist, the chair of the neighborhood association and city officials. The poem will be on a big screen. Marshall Trimble will tell his tales of Arizona’s history and culture and sing his songs of Arizona’s past. A musical group will perform the Arizona Anthem along with Arizona country songs.

MULTICULTURAL MUSIC FESTIVAL, El Mirage| The Multicultural Music Festival is a partnership between the Northwest Black History Committee and the City of El Mirage. The goal of the event is to unite an audience of all ages through music of all genres. The event will also feature family activities, vendors, community partners, vendors, and more. NATIONAL DAY OF THE COWBOY, Cottonwood| National Day Of The Cowboy has been celebrated since 2005 proclaimed by our former president Bush. We celebrate the heritage of the American West through educational and yet entertaining re-enactments. There is also story telling in the correct historical language. There is time period appropriate costumes, artifacts and props are all incorporated in the event. Demonstrations are given in black smithing, leather crafting, and knife making. (July 28, 2012)
NATIONAL TRAIN DAY, Chandler| May 10, 1869 the Transcontinental Railroad was completed. To celebrate this great achievement and to promote riding the rails on passenger trains Amtrak started National Train Day in 2008. In 2009 the Arizona Railway Museum joined in this event. During normal operations the museum has 3 to 6 pieces of equipment open for visitors to walk through. For National Train Day the museum opens all of its equipment, approximately 30 cars, for guests to see. In the past we have offered caboose rides, entry in to our locomotives and a chance to blow the locomotive’s air horns. When available, privately owned passenger cars and cabooses stored at the museum are also open to the public. Past attendance has ranged up to 1500 persons although it is believed that the facility can handle crowds up to twice that number. (May 12, 2012)

OPENING THE FLOODGATES : ROOSEVELT DAM AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SALT RIVER VALLEY, Phoenix| The exhibit at the Burton Barr Central Library will pay homage to the Roosevelt Dam. Roosevelt Dam is a historically significant landmark that is celebrating its own centennial during 2011. Its construction created jobs in Arizona, and was instrumental in furthering settlement by harnessing water for use in irrigation, in generating power, in ensuring water for domestic use, and for recreation.

OUR LITTLE CORNER OF COCHISE COUNTY, Sierra Vista| The Henry F. Hauser Museum in collaboration with the Sierra Vista Historical Society have been planning a community celebration of Arizona’s 100th birthday as it relates to “our little corner of Cochise County.” The Committee comprises staff and volunteers from the Henry F. Hauser Museum and other city government staff, as well as members of the Sierra Vista Historical Society, local businesses, historians, and authors. (January 28 – December 31, 2012)
PARADA DEL SOL PARADE, Scottsdale |The Parada Del Sol Parade is world-famous for having the longest horse-drawn parade. PASSAGE OF TIME: A HISTORY OF ARIZONA, Scottsdale| This event will take attendants through the period of Arizona history beginning with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and into the period of becoming the 48th state ending with our present day. (February 13, 2012)
PHOENIX CHINESE WEEK, Phoenix | Chinese immigration has been in the Valley since 1870; in fact they are one of the first groups of immigrants to settle in this area. This event will be celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year, which is equivalent to our Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday combined. The Chinese Community has been a quiet, stall art force building up Arizona. In the last couple decades, there are more Chinese immigrant from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Asian countries have settled in this area, and provide economical growth. POLLY ROSENBAUM WRITING CONTEST, Scottsdale | The Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest is named for Polly Rosenbaum, a former Arizona State Representative and teacher. This writing contest is a long-standing tradition. Mrs. Rosenbaum, who passed away in 2003 at the age of 104, believed Arizona’s young people are the state’s greatest resource. The creative writing contest is open to students in grades 7 through 12 in ALL public and charter schools. (February 14, 2012)
PRESCOTT FRONTIER DAYS® 125TH WORLD’S OLDEST RODEO® , Prescott| This annual event, consisting of an eight performance rodeo, parade, and three night dance, has taken place since 1888. PRESCOTT WESTERN HERITAGE DAYS, Prescott | The 2nd Annual Prescott Western Heritage Days event will celebrate the western heritage of Prescott and Yavapai County between 1864 and 1912. The event will be held on Whiskey Row, at Sharlot Hall Museum and various nearby venues and will feature the largest historical reenactment group gathering in Arizona. Family activities will include unique photo opportunities, reenactment skits, a period costume contest and fashion show, cowboy music and poetry, present-day rodeo events, a Wild West show and a film festival with Prescott-area movies. PUEBLO GRANDE MUSEUM INDIAN MARKET – CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION AND SALE, Phoenix | Confirmed artists of the 2012 Pueblo Grande Museum Indian Market will be invited to create an art piece based on a theme ?A Hundred Years of History.? Artists who choose to participate will provide a written narrative describing the story behind the art as it relates to Arizona’s past century. ROOSEVELT’S RIDE, Apache Junction |The project will feature a President Theodore Roosevelt re-enactor who will be the Grand Marshall for the annual Lost Dutchman Days Parade. He will be riding in an era-specific vehicle. After the parade he will drive to more locations on the historic Apache Trail where he will speak about the building of the road to carry materials for the construction of the Roosevelt Dam. ROUTE 66 DAYS CHARITY CAR SHOW, Flagstaff |The Route 66 Car Club evolved from one of the first car clubs active in Northern AZ. This club had as its primary focus the Chevrolet Corvair marque and older classic cars. The 7th annual charity car show that features over 400 antique, classic and collector automobiles – with music, food, vendors, all to benefit local charities. (September 10-11, 2011)
SAHUARITA PECAN FESTIVAL, Sahuarita| The Sahuarita Pecan Festival is a special event held in Sahuarita, Arizona to showcase local foods, products and crafts from the Santa Cruz River Valley. The event is hosted by Farmers Investment Co. (FICO), the world’s largest grower-processor of pecans. This unique, community-oriented celebration will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 from 10 am — 8 pm. Now entering its third year, the event is quickly becoming an annual Southern Arizona tradition. The Festival averaged nearly 15,000 attendees in 2009 and 2010. (November 12, 2011)

SCOTTSDALE ARABIAN HORSE SHOW & SHOPPING EXPO, Scottsdale | The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show & Shopping Expo is the largest Arabian horse show in the world, and attracts over 2,400 horses, and thousands of people, from all over the globe. Started in 1955, this show provides residents and visitors with a chance to enjoy the pageantry, athleticism and beauty represented by these magnificent horses. SEDONA CENTENNIAL QUILT, Sedona| The Sedona Centennial Quilt has been designed by local quilting artists and members of the Red Rock Quilters to depict important periods of local history over the last 100 years. The 50″x70″ quilt wall hanging will feature hand stitching, hand-appliqué and be hand quilted. (December 30, 2011 – February 14, 2012)
SEDONA HISTORIC HOME AND SITE TOUR, Sedona| The Sedona Heritage Museum and the City of Sedona are presenting this unique opportunity to tour some of Sedona’s designated historic landmarked architectural and historic places of interest as part of local Arizona Centennial celebrations. The tour will begin at the Sedona Heritage Museum. Self-drive ticket holders will receive a souvenir brochure that includes a map and detailed information about each site. Luxury coach ticket holders will also receive the souvenir brochures, but these people will have their own tour guide on the coach. The tour will include up to 12 sites including examples of architect Howard Madole’s designs and construction. Madole is recognized as an important Arizona mid-20th century designer. Other sites on tour will range from a homesteaders log cabin dating from the 1920s to Sedona’s first store to a historic cemetery. A reception will be held at the Museum at the end of the tour time frame. SHAPING ARIZONA STATEHOOD: THE GEORGE STUART HISTORICAL FIGURES OF THE MOVEMENT WEST, Tucson | The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures will open a new temporary exhibit; Shaping Arizona Statehood: The George Stuart Historical Figures of the Movement West on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 to coincide with the celebration of Arizona’s Centennial. The exhibit will be open through Sunday, April 15, 2012. George S. Stuart creates one-quarter-life-size historic figures of individuals who were the driving force that shaped history throughout the world. This exhibit brings together fourteen figures from his Movement West group that represent more than 400 years of New World discovery and exploration, carving the path to Arizona Statehood in 1912. SIX DEGREES TO JAMES H. McCLINTOCK, Phoenix| When James H. McClintock came to Phoenix in the late 1870s the city, and the territory, were in their infancy. As a newspaperman, historian, and a major booster of the region, McClintock was acquainted with many of the famous, and notorious, individuals who developed the area. Based on the premise of six degrees of separation, that every person is connected by six steps to another, we will attempt to rebuild McClintock’s social network using his research and correspondence files. STATEHOOD DAYS, Phoenix | Pioneer Village has the Original Log Cabin where Senator ashurst, our first Senator was born and raised We have the Original Opera House from Prescott moved here brick by brick and we hold dinner theatre and plays inside. We have the Original One Room School house moved here from Gordons Canyon where we will have school teachers inside. A working Blacksmith Shop doing demonstrations throughout the day .A church where we have Weddings along with over a mile of new sidewalks throughout the village for wheelchairs and strollers. Re-enactors will be roaming the town and doing demonstrations inside the buildings, Dutch oven cooking, and gunfighter entertainment, along with Gun Safety talks trolley rides will be going on through the entire village, along with farm animals that can be viewed from their pens On the 14th we will have our Grand Celebration (February 9, 2012)
STORIES OF THE BLACK CANYON SHEEP TRAIL, BLACK CANYON CITY| This project will provide funding for humanities scholars to research and document the history of the Black Canyon Sheep Driveway and create a named Collection at the Sharlot Hall Archives. The Black Canyon Sheep Driveway Collection will include papers, a bibliography, and oral histories, as well as photographs and other archival material. In order to provide wide access to this interesting and still living history, a permanent interpretive exhibit at Black Canyon Heritage Park will be erected. The exhibit will include three figures cut from steel: a sheep, a burro, and a sheep dog and incorporate an interpretive panel or panels. The installation of the interpretive exhibit will allow for a celebration to commemorate the Driveway and three additional public programs to include: readings by children‘s book author, Cindy Shanks. Cindy‘s books: Emily Walks the Sheep Trail, Alfonso Grows Up on the Sheep Trail, and Mickey the Sheep Dog will bring the metal figures to life and help children of all ages learn about this important story of their Arizona heritage. Storytelling by Basque sheep family members and their shepherds and Cordes Station family members, and Talks by scholars who have conducted research on the history of the Black Canyon Sheep Trail. The interpretive exhibit will be a permanent interpretive feature of Black Canyon Heritage Park and docents will be trained to share the highlights of these programs with visitors for years to come (January 26, 2012, February 23, 2012, September 22, 2012 and October 27, 2012)
SUN CITY WEST ARIZONA CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, Sun City West | The celebration from the city of volunteers for the centennial of Arizona. A parade of estimated 100 entries, 30 horses, 6-12 floats, 3 bands, 35 golf carts, 6 trucks, 2 fire trucks and various chartered groups from the state for Sun City West. In addition we will be inviting many dignitaries along with Tony Orlando (tentative) coming to Arizona to celebrate. Our residents will be given yellow ribbons as well as copper ribbons celebrating the 100th year of statehood. Ribbons will be placed along the parade route on trees, shrubs and poles. The parade route will end at the beautiful bearsley park and as the parade arrives we will have entertainment from the Sun City Pops Band and entertainment from Native American Hoop Dancer Champion Tony Duncan. Various community groups such as the Lions Club and Kiwannis, etc. will be servicing birthday cake at the park celebrating the anniversary. Parade applicants will be awarded prizes in various categories. All parade applicants are asked to display in their own way a tribute to the 100th anniversary celebration. (February 20, 2012)
TAKE A HIKE! HIKING SPREE, Prescott| The Take a Hike! Hiking Spree is an annual event in which 12 trails within the Prescott National Forest and the City of Prescott are chosen. We strive to choose 12 new trails each year and to fairly represent each of the three districts within the Forest. Participants have nine weeks to hike 8 out of the 12 trails. TEMPE TARDEADA, Tempe | The Tempe Tardeada’s mission statement reads: “To identify the Hispanic historical roots of Tempe and educate the community with a celebration of the Hispanic culture”. A tardeada is a social gathering that was traditionally held on Sunday afternoons in the Hispanic community. The Tempe Tardeada adopted this name to reflect on and remember the old-time feeling of the Sunday afternoon gatherings of the past. Held during Hispanic Heritage Month, the Tempe Tardeada celebrates the historical significance of Hispanics within our community. The event features 8 hours of live entertainment, both music and dance, which presents a timeline from traditional performances such as Mariachis, charros, orchestras, and folklorico dancers to the current music trends of salsa and zumba dance. Community booths are at the event to educate the participatants on the many free social services available in the valley. The Tempe History Museum is open during the festival and displays the Hispanic Family Albums collection, which highlights photos from Tempe’s founding Hispanic families. Food is also an important component to all cultures and is very important to have at festivals. We give our food vendors free booth space, and ask in return that they keep their prices at low family-friendly prices. We offer a family-friendly, multi-generational event where parents can bring their children and not worry about spending too much money. All the Hispanic-themed arts and crafts are free, as is the face painter, balloon artist, inflatables and Game Truck. In keeping alive some Mexican traditions, there is a tortilla-making demonstration with free recipe-cards. A coloring contest is held, whereby every student in the Tempe Elementary School District receives an entry sheet and is encouraged to draw a picture of Hispanic heritage in Tempe. The teachers are given a “History of Hispanics in Tempe” handout as a lesson plan as part of the coloring contest. During the Tardeada, the Mayor of Tempe presents the contest winners with a certificate and a $25 Target gift card. Finally, a scholarship is presented to two graduating high school seniors. Criteria is residency in Tempe and/or attendance at a high school in Tempe. Scholarships are selected based on grades, community and school activities, and a written essay with one of the topics being: “How has the Arizona Hispanic culture influenced our community?” (October 9, 2011)
TEMPE’S CENTENNIAL SATURDAYS, Tempe | Tempe’s Centennial Saturdays are a part of the Fabulous Arizona, Fantastic Tempe LSTA grant awarded to Tempe Library. The goal of Fabulous Arizona, Fantastic Tempe is to increase Tempe residents’ appreciation and understanding of Arizona’s history, cultures, art and environment. Families will be enriched by attending informational and entertaining programs on Arizona and southwest themes. Programs will be promoted and presented at the Escalante and North Tempe Multigenerational Centers, Tempe History Museum, the Vihel Center and the Tempe Public Library to reach a wide and diverse audience of adults and families. All programs will have Arizona and southwest bibliographies and centennial materials available to view or take home. At Tempe Library programs, books on Arizona will be available for checkout. THE ARIZONA CENTENNIAL BALL, Queen Creek | Fashion, Music & Dance: Our focus in music and dance will be the historic, Western Culture of Arizona … and our folks will dress accordingly with a mix of fashions such as “Old West”, “Cowboy” and “Pioneer.” Victorian attire (Territorial era), Edwardian attire (circa Statehood 1912) and traditional Mexican fashions (Old Spanish, ranchero, fiesta, fandango) are welcome too. Others may opt for a “Vintage Western” look of the 1940s-1960s with rhinestones, spangles, ranch skirts or bolo ties. But modern western folks of the 21st century are also very welcome and we expect to see many in boots, cowboy hats, western shirts and jeans. Whether coming as “Old Timey” or “New Country” just make sure you come – and do have a good time! New to this type of dancing? Don’t worry. We’ll keep it simple, teach as we go and have everyone engaged and having fun from the very first dance of the evening! (February 11, 2012)
THE CENTENNIAL TASTE OF ARIZONA, Phoenix | In partnership with the Centennial Commission, The Stockyards will plan and execute the Centennial Taste of Arizona event in 2011 on February 9, – the 100th anniversary of the approval of the Arizona Constitution in 1911 – that will unofficially kick off the Centennial celebration leading up to Arizona’s 100th birthday. Designed as a participatory initiative, The Stockyards will conduct a public contest asking Arizonans to send their suggestions for a Centennial Menu. Finalists will be featured at the event, and attendees will vote for the items to be featured on the official Centennial Menu. (February 9, 2011)

THE HEART OF ARIZONA, Prescott | This is concert three (3) of the 2011-12 season. This concert is titled “The Heart of Arizona” in honor of the Centennial. The symphony is commissioning a musical selection by Henry Flurry in recognition of the event. Additionally, the symphony will perform the Sy Brannon piece commissioned by the state. The concert will also feature the beloved Toni Tennille. Both composers will be in attendance. The conductor is Paul Manz. (February 12, 2012)

THE SOUNDS OF STATEHOOD, Tempe| The Sounds of Statehood is a musical story which portrays the history of Arizona from about 1870 to February 14, 1912, culminating with statehood. Using two fictional characters, Mariquita Hernandez and Captain Jesse Wrightson, The Sounds of Statehood depicts the lives of actual, true-to life town founders, such as Judge Charles Hayden and his wife Sallie Hayden of the Hayden Flour Mill in Tempe. Historical events and prominent Arizona pioneers are also brought to life on stage, from areas such as; Flagstaff, The Grand Canyon, Prescott, Jerome, Pinedale and Tucson. THE WALLACE & LADMO SHOW, Tempe | This is a stage play with music. The subject is the children’s TV program, The Wallace & Ladmo Show. It will be presented in two locations that should make it available to most of the valley, first in the far north end in Carefree and then in the south end of the valley at the Herberger Theatre in downtown Phoenix. Ticket prices will be in the range of $20 to $30. This is a co-production between Desert Foothills Theatre and Actors Theatre of Phoenix with additional funding from Centennial Theatre Foundation. THE WORLD’S OLDEST CONTINOUS RODEO, Payson| The World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo represents Arizona’s heritage. In the beginning cowboys and cowgirls gathers from all over the south west to celebrate the end of round up and show off their skills in a hometown/ranch atmosphere where Arizona hospitality shone. The tradition continues today with the 128th rodeo. (August 19-21, 2011)
TOWN OF PAYSON MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES, Payson| The Payson Arizona Mountain High Games are the Southwest’s largest celebration of adventure sports combined with ATV trail rides, and a massive outdoor expo. Professional and amateur athletes from all over the Southwest and the Pacific Northwest will converge upon the mountain community of Payson to compete in 9 different competitions for cash and prizes. This year’s sporting events include: Mountain Biking, 5K Trail Run, Dutch Oven Cooking Contest, Archery Competition, ATV Rodeo, ATV Trail Rides, The Sawdust Festival, and an old fashioned horse shoe tournament. He has appeared on the stages of the National cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, The Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso, New Mexico and The Arizona Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Prescott, Arizona. TREASURES OF THE RARE BOOK ROOM: THE ALFRED KNIGHT COLLECTION, Phoenix| The Burton Barr Central Library will exhibit items from the Alfred Knight Rare Book collection including illuminated manuscripts, cuneiform tablets, Shakespeare folios and great works in the history of the book. TUBAC ANZA DAYS, Tubac| Living history event commemorating the 1775-1776 expedition led by Captain Juan Bautista de Anza of the Spanish Presidio in Tubac to establish what was to become San Francisco. The event will include re-enactments, street theater, food, educational presentations, and on-stage entertainment. (October 22, 2011)
TUCSON GEM & MINERAL SHOW, Tucson| The acclaimed “Tucson Gem and Mineral Show” is held every year on the second full weekend of February. It has set the standard for gem and mineral shows around the world, and is now the largest gem and mineral show in the United States. It is the cornerstone event of the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase, bringing 55,000 visitors to Tucson annually. The Show is open to the public and presents educational exhibits and retail dealers only. Proceeds from the Show remain in the Tucson economy and are used to support mineral knowledge and appreciation. (February 9 – 12, 2012)

TUMBLEWEED TREE LIGHTING AND PARADE OF LIGHTS, Chandler| The Tumbleweed Tree Lighting and Parade of Lights is the City’s largest single day attended event. The event is free to attend and is family friendly. Activities include kids games, two stages with entertainment, food booths, arts and crafts booth, pony rides, along with free pictures with Santa. The two main features of the evening are Parade of Lights and the lighting of the Tumbleweed Tree. (December 3, 2011)

USPS CENTENNIAL POSTAL STATION, Show Low| Fee is based on a special envelope containing historical cachet, centennial stamp and centennial cancel. The Show Low Historical Museum is highlighting the Post Office Room with special displays and will be operating as an Official Centennial Station. We have pictures of the Show Low territorial Post Office buildings including the last one and also the first official Statehood Post Office. On display are several envelopes from the territorial days, artifacts from early post offices, and maps that show the movement of the post office buildings signed by the US postmasters. We have the Show Low 50 year anniversary of Incorporation (2003) canceller, pen and covers on display in a special sealed viewable box. This room is always included in our school Heritage Tour Day program for grades 3 and 5. (TBD)
VA VETERANS DAY PARADE, Phoenix| The VA Veterans Day Parade is an annual event designed to honor our nation’s Veterans on their special day Veterans Day. The VA Veterans Day Parade will include 100 entries to mark our AZ Centennial. Entries consist of Veterans Service Organizations (such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans etc.; novelty units such as horses, historical cars, War Dog entries; ROTC units, Color Guards, Floats, Helium Balloons, Floats and bands. There are several levels of Marshal in the parade including Celebrity Grand Marshals, Veterans Grand Marshals denoting each era of service and each branch of service, and a Business Community Grand Marshal. The Veterans Grand Marshals are designed to depict the history of Arizona’s military service, pulling from all units that are presently housed in Arizona. Tied to the parade each year is a state wide Essay Contest for students from grades 5-12 to write essays depicting the parade theme, which changes each year. The 2011 parade theme is “Veterans Our Resilient Heroes” denoting the educational component of what it means to be a military member and to highlight the impact that has on our families and citizens across the great state of Arizona. The winning essays are read to patients, staff, and the community at the Parade Reading Essay Breakfast on October 27 and the Essay Winners ride in the VA Veterans Day Parade. Along the route, there are 7-8 educational offerings as local celebrities from TV and Radio outlets gather to read the scripts assembled by the Parade Coordinator, to help educate those in attendance about our Veterans and the entities designed to honor, recognize and support them. VAIL PRIDE DAY 2012, Pima County Fairgrounds| Vail Pride Day is an annual event showcasing the Vail School District and Vail area community. It is highlighted by student and community organization fine arts performances, academic competitions and displays, hands-on activities and community displays. This event has the 2nd highest annual attendance at the Pima County Fairgrounds after the Pima County Fair. (February 18, 2012)
VALLE DEL SOL’S PROFILE OF SUCCESS, Phoenix| The 22nd annual event of Valle del Sol’s Profiles of Success will be held on September 7, 2012 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Profiles of Success launches National Hispanic Heritage Month in Arizona and proudly highlights the resolve and enthusiasm demonstrated by honorees whose contributions of leadership, service to the community, and advocacy benefit our Arizona community. Profiles of Success draws more than 1,400 people and provides a community partnership with Valle del Sol, including participating in a culturally informative event targeting Latino business leaders and other community representatives. Profiles of Success serves as an opportunity to honor our community’s heroes. Through an on-line nomination process, leaders will be recognized in various categories during the event. The honorees selected will be announced in May of 2012. The funds raised from Profiles of Success will directly assist Valle del Sol in its efforts to provide extensive services and programs to thousands of individuals in our community who depend upon the agency to bring about positive changes in their lives. VERDE CANYON RAILROAD CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION – 100 YEARS OF RAILROADING, Clarkdale | Our Centennial Celebration, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is free to the public. The train departs each day at 2 p.m. and requires a ticket purchase. Verde Canyon Railroad’s knowledgeable staff will take visitors on a complimentary 20-minute tour of their vintage engines, only two of 10 remaining in North America; through the mid-last century passenger cars which once linked America coast to coast, and on a tour of the John Bell Museum which highlights the Railroad’s storied past. New to the depot is the special event’s tent, where free exhibitions celebrating the Verde Valley will be on display. Agriculture, history, wildlife conservation and Native American cultures will be represented. Area attractions and local artisans will round out the morning venue, along with breakfast and lunch options. (February 11-12, 2012)
VERDE VALLEY BIRDING AND NATURE FESTIVAL, Cottonwood| The natural world is a pivotal component of tourism in Arizona. Watchable Wildlife brings visitors from all over to enjoy Arizona’s resources. Bird watching is the number two recreational hobby in America today. The Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival hosts field trips to IBA’s (Important Birding Areas) in the Verde Valley attracting outdoor enthusiasts from all over the country and internationally to this annual event. This is a well-rounded event that has become one of the leading festivals of its kind in the US today. The festival has been awarded the Governor’s Tourism Treasure Award. The Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival has celebrated eleven years in Central Arizona. During this four-day event participants enjoy field trips, workshops, speakers, vendors, exhibitors and special programs. This event is the result of a partnership between Arizona State Parks, the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce and Northern Arizona Audubon. Run completely by volunteers, many other agencies and organizations have joined to produce this event including the City of Cottonwood, National Park Service, US Forest Service, Arizona Game and Fish, local businesses and organizations, and public agencies. VICTORIAN FRONTIER CHRISTMAS, CAMP VERDE| The Victorian Christmas Event includes a Victorian ornament-making workshop, Candlelight tours and Victorian decorations displayed in all four of the historic adobe buildings. This event brings together volunteers and the community az they either stroll along lamp-lit Officer’s Row or sit on strw bales on a starry night, sipping hot chocolate and listening to stories of the past shared around the campfire by Mr. Mrs. Claus. Letters written by soldiers told of their experiences at Christmas time and provide us with a deeper understanding of sacrifices made by our military. (December 8, 2012 to January 7, 2013)
VOAW FILM FESTIVAL, Avondale | VOWA celebrating the culture of Arizona women. Arizona was only one of nine states to grant women the right to vote. Arizona women were granted the right to vote eight years before the 19th amendment was passed. Arizona was one of the first states women to elect a woman as secretary of state (Rose Mufford) she went on to serve as governor from 1988-1991. Past, present, and encouraging future generations to have their voices heard using the vehicle of film. (September 22, 2012)
VULTURE MINE LIVING HISTORY DAY, Wickenburg| Mining is the core of Arizona’s history. Gold ore from the Vulture and other mines attracted the men and industries that led to statehood. Mining continues to be one of Arizona’s mainstay industries. This family oriented event celebrates AZ’s colorful mining history and Henry Wickenburg’s 1863 discovery of what became the fabled Vulture Gold Mine (March 25, 2012)
WALKIN’ ON MAIN STREET, Cottonwood| Walkin On Main Street is an annual one-day event celebrated the 2 Saturday of November. The theme for the event this year is Arizona’s 100th Year of Statehood and the historic significance of State Route 89A. Nestled between Jerome and Sedona, Cottonwood is blessed with a lively history. (November 12, 2012)
WESTERN CENTENNIAL GALA, Cave Creek| l. Major fundraiser for the library. 2. It is a 501C3 non-profit public library. 3. Receive no tax assistance. 4. Funding for library is by donations and fundraisers. 5. Library is run by 1 full time employee, 6 part-time employees and over 100 community volunteers. 6. This evert is very critical to the operation of the library. The evening will be of a western theme with a sit down catered dinner. Entertainment will be a piano player, guitarist singing old western songs, possibly a mock hold-up, and special guest Bob Boze Bell telling the history of Arizona and the local area. It will be a very fun evening with attendees all dressed in western and early period fashions. (February 11, 2012)

WHY HISTORY MATTERS, Camp Verde| Montezuma Castle National Monument and the Camp Verde Historical Society are hosting a celebratory gathering with speakers in honor the 100th anniversary of Arizona statehood. Speakers will include Dr. Michael Amundson, professor of history at Northern Arizona University; Dr. David Wilcox, research associate for the Museum of Northern Arizona; and Steve Ayers, president of the Camp Verde Historical Society. WINTER RANGE, Phoenix | The Old West will once again come alive as more than 1000men, women and juniors journey to the Ben Avery Shooting Range February 20 – 25, 2012 for the 20th Annual gathering of Winter Range. Winter Range is an exciting 6-day event that provides the backdrop for the Single Action Shooting Winter Range has grown to the largest Western Encampment in the United States. In addition to the competitive events, Winter Range 2011 will feature displays of period militaria, exhibitions of western skills and crafts, and nearly 100 vendors purveying everything from period clothing to antiques and reproductions. Entertainment will be readily available in the form of a number of singers, cowboy bands, trick roping, trick horses and various other forms of cowboy entertainment. A variety of food services are also available – from authentic chuck wagon cooking to hot dogs. Winter Range is truly an exciting event for the whole family. (February 20-25, 2012)
WUFC ARIZONA CENTENNIAL CANCER RESEARCH FUNDRAISER, Mesa| Thirty authors celebrate Arizona’s 100th birthday at the Arizona Biltmore on February 2nd, 2012 from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm by raising money for two Arizona-based Cancer Research Programs. Physicians and Health Care Providers as well as Arizona Senator Jerry Lewis will talk about advances in alternative cancer prevention and treatment in Arizona. WYATT EARP’S VENDETTA RIDE, Tombstone, Cochise County| Wyatt Earp and Tombstone became legendary across the country in 1882 during his Vendetta Ride against the Cowboy faction – a group of outlaws and cattle rustlers responsible for maiming his older brother and assassinating his younger brother. This five-day horseback ride follows Wyatt and his posse’s trail of retribution to those locales where Wyatt tracked and killed Curly Bill (in the Whetstone Mountains), Florentio Cruz (South Pass, Dragoon MTNs), Johnny Ringo’s Gravesite (Chiricahua MTNs), etc. Our ride also includes: An historic walk-around of Tombstone with an historian, who will also meet us at different locales we visit, a ride to Cochise’s Stronghold and history of the area and Cochise, a ride from Fairbank to Charleston along the San Pedro River. Lots of local history with local historians. We have used Marshall Trimble, Don Taylor, Bob Boze Bell and Nancy Sosa as our historians during the past two years. (October 16-21, 2011)
YCGA 79TH ANNUAL CALF SALE & BBQ, Peeples Valley | The Yavapai Cattle Grower’s Association will hold their Annual Calf Sale & BBQ for the 79th year. The event began in 1933 as a way to raise money for the national organization-today known as The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association-which was, at the time, in danger of financial collapse. The roster of activities is enormous this year! Activities begin with the Maughan Ranches Quarterhorse sale at 8:00 a.m. A 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Clinic will begin with sign-ups at 8:00 a.m. Western art, crafts, and jewelry as well as industry information booths will open at 10:00 a.m. Arizona Game & Fish in cooperation with Adobe Mountain Wildlife Rehab Center is providing a sport shooting trailer and an Arizona Wildlife Display. Adobe Mountain Wildlife will also be holding a live release of three American Kestrel Falcons. In addition there will be gold panning, mutton busting (for kids 60 pounds and under, weigh-in begins at 10:00 a.m.), a horseshoeing demonstration, KVRD radio live remote with ?Mark in the Morning?, a quilt drawing and of course the best BBQ BEEF in the state! Take a scenic drive to beautiful Peeples Valley, bring a chair or blanket, spend the day at a historic ranch, meet a real cowboy, enjoy the best BBQ BEEF around, and get to know your local, county, and state politicians and candidates.
