Centennial Way Groundbreaking
On Tuesday, May 17, 2011 a great crowd gathered in front of Carnegie Library for the Centennial Way Groundbreaking! This project that will transform Washington Street into a beautiful and unofficial gateway to the State Capitol.
The Arizona Centennial Commission, the Arizona Department of Transportation and the city of Phoenix are all working together to make Centennial Way a reality! At the Groundbreaking Ceremony we heard from several distinguished individuals, including Governor Janice Brewer, the Honorable Charles Jones, Karen Churchard, Phoenix City Councilman Mike Johnson and City of Phoenix Street Transportation Director, Wylie Bearup.
Some inspiring words about this project included “When Centennial Way is completed, it will be the result of several visionary takeholders coming together to create a streetscape of which Arizonans can be proud,” said Governor Jan Brewer, who led groundbreaking festivities. “It will be a noteworthy thoroughfare leading to our state’s capitol and to downtown Phoenix as well, and incorporate elements of our state’s culture and diversity from every corner of Arizona. It will be a fitting tribute to our 15 counties and our 22 Native American tribes. The result, I believe, will be an improvement that is fitting as we approach Arizona’s 100 years of statehood.”
The Centennial Way Groundbreaking was a great way to gear up for this great project, construction will be underway soon!
