MARANA – Students at Estes Elementary can tell you first-hand that a penny saved is a penny earned – they raised over $1,000 in pennies to help refurbish the Arizona Capitol Copper Dome for the Arizona centennial next year.
According to the Arizona Centennial 2012 Foundation, more than 68,000 students in kindergarten through 8th grade around Arizona collected 2,375,745 pennies, or $23,757.45, to help polish and refurbish the Capitol Copper Dome to serve as the centerpiece for the upcoming Arizona Centennial celebrations.
Seven-hundred and twenty Estes Elementary School students in Marana raised $1,309.70, more than any other school in Arizona, and won the grand prize: a school wide party this Friday. The “Copper Chopper,” the official Arizona Centennial Mascot, will be there, and each student will get a commemorative copper coin and a Basha’s coupon for free pizza.
The Arizona Centennial Celebration will take place February 14, 2012. Click here for more information on the Centennial Foundation and the planned celebrations.
